Egypt, the powerhouse of African football, is set to make its mark once again in the Africa Cup of Nations. Placed in Group B alongside Ghana, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, Egypt boasts of an impressive AFCON heritage.

They were the inaugural champions of the tournament and hold the record for the most titles won, with seven in total. Notably, they achieved a remarkable « three-peat » by clinching three consecutive titles in 2006, 2008, and 2010.

Despite being the most successful nation in AFCON history, Egypt fell short in the previous edition of the tournament in 2021, finishing as runners-up. However, they are determined to reclaim their glory and prove their dominance in African football.

Their journey in the 34th edition of AFCON begins on January 14th at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. They will face Mozambique’s national team, known as the Os Mambas, who are making their comeback to the competition after a decade-long absence. The Os Mambas have participated in the Africa Cup of Nations four times, but have never advanced beyond the group stage. This year, they are eager to surpass their previous performances and make a mark on the tournament.

In another Group B match on the same day, the Black Stars of Ghana will take on Cape Verde at 8pm, in the same stadium. Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, aims to secure their fifth title in this edition. Disappointed by their failure to qualify for the round of 16 in the last tournament, the Black Stars are determined to make amends and bring home the trophy for the first time in the 21st century.

Cape Verde, on the other hand, is participating in the continental jamboree for the fourth time in their history. They will be looking to make a strong impression and surpass their previous performances in the tournament.

The stage is set for an exciting and fiercely competitive Group B, as these four teams vie for a spot in the knockout stages of AFCON 2023. Football fans around the continent eagerly await the kickoff of these matches, which promise to deliver thrilling displays of skill and determination on the field.
