Group D of the final draw for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) promises to be an exciting and competitive group. The group has Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, and Mauritania. Each team has its own unique history in the AFCON competition, making Group D, one to watch.

Algeria’s Desert Foxes are two times AFCON Champions. Their first victory came in 1990 when they hosted the competition, and they lifted the trophy again in 2019. Led by their star player Riyad Mahrez, Algeria will be a formidable force in Group D.

They will begin their Campaign against Angola, on the 15th of January 2024 at 8pm. Angola who has had a mixed history in the AFCON competition, will be participating in the tournament for the 9th time. With their best performance coming in 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals, Angola who failed to qualify for the previous edition, will be hoping to make a strong impression in Group D and secure a spot in the knockout stages.

Meanwhile, the Stallions of Burkina Faso, have also had their moments of glory in the AFCON. Their best ever finish in the tournament was the 2013 edition, when they reached the final but were narrowly defeated by Nigeria. However, the Stallions’ passionate and determined style of play makes them a team to watch in Group D.

For their AFCON 2023 début, they will take on Mauritania on the 16th of January at exactly 2pm. Mauritania, regarded as the underdogs of Group D, will be making their ever first AFCON debut in 2023. Despite being newcomers to the competition, they have shown great progress in recent years. The Lions of Chinguetti, as they are known, will be eager to make a mark and cause some upsets in the group.

From all indications, Group D promises to be a tightly contested battle, with each team bringing its own strengths and aspirations. The presence of two times champions, Algeria, adds an extra layer of excitement to the group. Fans can expect thrilling matches and fierce competition as these four teams vie for a spot in the knockout stages of the game.
