United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the massacre of civilians in Mamfe, a town in the South West region of Cameroon tore by a separatist conflict since 2016.

The incident, known as the Egbekaw carnage which occurred on the 6th November 2023 resulted in the death of 25 people, including children and several persons injured.
In a press release, Guterres expressed his outrage at the attack, describing it as « one barbarity too much. » He emphasized that such attacks against civilian populations are unacceptable and called for those responsible to be held accountable for their actions.

Also, Antonio GUTERES extended his heartfelt condolences to the affected families and urged the Cameroonian government to launch a thorough investigation into the incident. He emphasized the importance of bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring that such atrocities do not go unpunished.
The Portuguese diplomat further called on all parties involved in the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon to seek a peaceful resolution. The crisis, which has been ongoing for several years, has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement of many people.

The condemnation from the United Nations comes as the international community continues to express concern over the escalating violence in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon. The crisis, which began as a peaceful protest by English-speaking Cameroonians against perceived marginalization, has since spiraled into a full-blown conflict.
