The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict: Together for a more sustainable future amidst the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon.
November 6th every year is observed as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. This year, the theme « Together for a more sustainable future » highlights the urgent need to protect the environment, even in times of conflict. In Cameroon, the ongoing Anglophone crisis has had a significant impact on the environment, making this day all the more relevant.

The Anglophone crisis, which began in 2016, has resulted in a protracted conflict between separatist groups and the Cameroonian government in the English-speaking regions of the country. While the crisis primarily revolves around political and social issues, its consequences have extended beyond human lives and livelihoods, severely impacting the environment.

One of the most visible environmental impacts of the Anglophone crisis is destruction of infrastructure, including schools and healthcare facilities, has also led to indirect environmental consequences. The lack of basic services has forced communities to rely heavily on natural resources, leading to their overexploitation.

Moreover, the absence of proper waste management systems in conflict-affected areas has resulted in increased pollution and health risks. On streets and at major junctions, especially in Bamenda, chief town of the North West region, the continuous piling up of refuse is reported to have become the order of day.

Recognizing the importance of addressing these environmental challenges, local and international organizations have been working together to mitigate the impact of the crisis on the environment. Efforts have been made to promote sustainable livelihoods as well as waste management.
The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict serves as a reminder that even amid conflict, safeguarding the environment is crucial for long-term peace and sustainable development. It calls for collective action to protect natural resources, promote environmental conservation, and ensure the well-being of communities affected by armed conflicts.

As the Anglophone crisis continues to unfold, both the government and separatist groups are expected to prioritize environmental protection alongside political negotiations as it is often said that the sustainable future of a country depends on the preservation of its natural resources and the well-being of its people.
