In a tragic turn of events, a former combatant of the separatist Ambazonia movement was killed by the Ambazonia Defense Forces (ADF) on June 17, 2024. The incident took place in Bamenda, the capital of the North-West region, which has been a hotspot of conflict since the beginning of the Anglophone crisis.
The deceased, identified as a former fighter who had recently laid down arms under a government-led disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) program, was reportedly targeted by the ADF for his decision to abandon the separatist cause. Eyewitnesses reported that the former combatant was ambushed and shot by armed individuals believed to be members of the ADF. The attackers accused him of betrayal and collaboration with government forces.
The killing has sparked widespread condemnation from various quarters. Government officials and local leaders have decried the act as a setback to peace efforts in the troubled region. “This senseless killing is a reminder of the challenges we face in achieving lasting peace,” said a spokesperson from the Ministry of Territorial Administration. “We call on all ex-combatants to remain steadfast in their commitment to peace despite the threats.”
Local authorities are investigating the attack and have reiterated their commitment to protecting ex-combatants and supporting peace efforts in the region.
