Cameroon marked World Refugee Day, honoring the resilience of refugees amidst ongoing challenges. This year’s theme, “Hope Away from Home,” highlighted solidarity and support for displaced individuals.
In Yaoundé, government officials, international organizations, and the refugee community participated in the main event. Minister of Social Affairs, Pauline Irène Nguene, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to aiding refugees despite significant obstacles. “We are working with international partners to ensure refugees receive necessary support,” she stated.
Cameroon continues to face the Anglophone crisis, leading to substantial internal displacement. The country also hosts refugees from Nigeria and the Central African Republic, further straining resources.
The refugee influx has increased demand for food, shelter, and healthcare, impacting the economy and environment. Various programs have been implemented to integrate refugees into the local economy and reduce aid dependency.
The UNHCR and other bodies continue to provide crucial aid and advocate for increased international support to manage the refugee crisis effectively.
As Cameroon celebrates World Refugee Day, the focus remains on the resilience of refugees and the need for global solidarity. Despite challenges, the commitment to supporting displaced persons is strong, reflecting a shared responsibility to protect and assist refugees worldwide.
