CAMEROON/TECHNOLOGY : ELON MUSK AIMS TO EXPAND STARLINK EMPIRE

0

Starlink, the company owned by Elon Musk, is set to expand its services to Cameroon, after Nigeria, Kenya and Benin. The move is aimed at providing internet connectivity to areas with little or no access to internet services.

Starlink plans to launch its satellite connectivity service in Cameroon in 2024, following its successful deployment in other African nations. This move will enable users in rural areas with limited or unstable internet access to easily and rapidly connect.

As of October 2023, the company has officially been launched in over seven African countries notably Nigeria, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Malawi, Zambia and Benin. These countries provide customers with the opportunity to order directly from the Starlink website.

In a bid to facilitate the deployment of Starlink’s satellite internet access services in Africa, the company has partnered with a major African e-commerce platform which will be responsible for distributing the necessary equipment to users on the continent.

Elon Musk is not only targeting the central African giant, but Botswana, and Namibia are expected to welcome it in 2024.

That notwithstanding, it is worth noting that Cameroon has made significant progress in high-speed mobile internet access in recent years, according to the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Minette Libom Li Likeng. However, internet services remain relatively high, especially for low-income individuals.

It is worth mentioning, the arrival of Elon Musk’s Starlink is expected to improve internet services for Cameroonians, and equally, increase internet penetration significantly.
