Thousands of travelers were left stranded across various cities in Cameroon following the sudden suspension of operations by Mondial Express, one of the country’s leading bus transport companies.
The situation, it should be said, follows the involvement of one of the agency’s buses in an accident on June 25, 2024, at the Dschang Cliff in Menoua Division of the West Region.
It claimed six lives and left 22 others injured. The driver of the said bus, Fongo Joel, is also said to be admitted in a health facility.
Mondial Express, known for its extensive network and reliable service, has been a crucial link for many Cameroonians traveling between major cities such as Douala, Yaoundé, Bafoussam, and Bamenda. The abrupt halt in services has left many without alternative transportation options, leading to overcrowded terminals and long queues at ticket counters of other transport companies.
In an official statement, Mondial Express cited “unforeseen operational challenges” as the reason for the suspension but did not provide further details. The company assured customers that efforts are being made to resolve the issues and resume services as soon as possible. “We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to our valued passengers and are working tirelessly to address the situation,” the statement read.
The suspension has had a ripple effect on the economy, with businesses and individuals facing delays and disruptions. Many travelers, especially those who had pre-booked tickets, expressed frustration and disappointment. “I was scheduled to travel to Douala for an important business meeting. Now, I have no idea how I will get there on time,” lamented one stranded passenger.
Government authorities have called for calm and are coordinating with other transport providers to accommodate the displaced travelers. The Ministry of Transport is also engaging with Mondial Express management to expedite a resolution.
This incident highlights the reliance of many Cameroonians on bus transport for intercity travel and underscores the need for improved infrastructure and contingency plans within the transport sector. As the situation unfolds, passengers and stakeholders alike are hopeful for a swift and effective resolution.
