The World Science Day for Peace and Development was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001.

It aims at raising awareness about the importance of science in society and the need for its integration into policy-making processes as this year’s theme emphasizes the significance of trust in scientific research and its applications. According to sources, trust in science is fundamental as it ensures the credibility and reliability of scientific findings. It encourages collaboration, transparency, and openness, which are essential for scientific progress.

Cameroon, a country with a diverse range of ecosystems and natural resources, recognizes the importance of science in addressing its development challenges.

The country has made significant moves in promoting scientific research and innovation through various initiatives and institutions. The National Institute of Cartography (INC), the National Institute of Statistics (INS), and the National Institute of Geological Research and Mining (IRGM) are just a few examples of institutions contributing to scientific knowledge in Cameroon.

Building trust in science is seen as particularly important for Cameroon, as she faces numerous challenges that require evidence-based solutions. From climate change and biodiversity conservation to healthcare and technological advancements, science inevitably plays a crucial role in addressing these issues.

According to specialists, Cameroon should focus on strengthening scientific literacy among her citizens in order to promote trust in science. This could be done by providing accessible and accurate scientific information, the government empowering individuals to make informed decisions and actively engage with scientific advancements. Additionally, fostering collaboration between scientists, policymakers, and the public could enhance transparency and ensure that scientific research aligns with the needs and aspirations of the Cameroonian society.

On this World Science Day for Peace and Development, Cameroon joins the global community in recognizing the importance of building trust in science, which can permit her unlock the full potential of her scientific community and drive sustainable development for the benefit of all Cameroonians.
