December 3rd is observed annually as the International Day for Disabled Persons, a day dedicated to promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
This year’s theme, « United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for, with and by persons with disabilities, » emphasizes the need for collective efforts to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunities for all.
As of October 2023 and according to the UN, approximately 10% of the world’s population, or roughly 650 million people, live with a disability. In most of the OECD countries, females have higher rates of disability than males. Eighty percent of persons with disabilities live in developing countries, according to the UN.
In Cameroon, like many other countries, persons with disabilities face numerous challenges in their daily lives.
For instance; access to education, employment opportunities and physical accessibility remain a significant challenge for persons with disabilities in Cameroon. Public spaces, transportation, and buildings are often inaccessible, making it difficult for individuals with mobility impairments to move freely and independently.
Despite these challenges, there have been some positive developments in the country towards promoting inclusivity for this minority.
On the International Day for Disabled Persons, it is always crucial to recognize the progress made while acknowledging the work that still needs to be done. It is a call to action for governments, policymakers, and society as a whole to prioritize the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities and to work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals for, with, and by them.
