On October 17th, 2023, the world observed the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty which aims at raising awareness about the ongoing struggle faced by millions of people worldwide and to promote actions towards ending poverty in all its forms.
Through resolution 47/196 adopted on the 22nd of December 1992, the UN General Assembly declared October 17th as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
This year’s theme, « Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting Dignity in Practice for All, » highlighted the importance of providing decent work opportunities and social protection measures for all individuals, regardless of their socio-economic background.
This is because, poverty remains a pressing issue that affects people from all walks of life, regardless of their age, gender, or nationality. It deprives individuals of their basic human rights, including access to education, healthcare, and adequate living conditions.
It serves as a reminder that poverty is not inevitable and that concerted efforts are needed to address this global challenge. Governments, civil society organizations, and individuals must work together to implement sustainable strategies that promote economic growth, social inclusion, and the eradication of poverty.
This, by ensuring decent work opportunities for all, which involves fair wages, safe working conditions, equal opportunities and social protection measures like easy access to healthcare, education, social security, and other essential services that provide a safety net for vulnerable individuals and families.
On this day, individuals are all called upon to reflect on the progress made so far and renew their commitment to ending poverty, since it is a collective responsibility to advocate for policies that promote decent work and social protection, and to support initiatives that empower individuals and communities to break the cycle of poverty.
