On the 11th of October, the world commemorates the International Girls Child Day. This significant day, celebrated annually, aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by girls around the globe and advocate for their rights and well-being. This year’s theme is « Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well Being. »

The International Girl Child Day serves as a reminder that girls have the right to education, health, and protection from violence and discrimination. It highlights the importance of empowering girls and investing in their future, as they are the leaders of tomorrow.
Across the globe, various organizations, governments, and individuals organize events and activities to mark this important day with the main objective, raising awareness about the issues faced by girls, promoting gender equality, and advocating for policies that protect and empower girls.
In Cameroon, several initiatives are undertaken to celebrate the International Girl Child Day. Non-governmental organizations, schools, and community groups organize seminars, workshops, and awareness campaigns to educate girls about their rights and encourage them to pursue their dreams.
Some of the key messages emphasized on during this year’s edition are the importance of investing in girls’ education, highlighting the need to address the challenges faced by girls, such as child marriage, gender-based violence, and discrimination.
The International Girl Child Day also serves as a platform to recognize and celebrate the achievements of girls who have overcome obstacles and made significant contributions to their communities.
It should be noted, the Beijing Declaration is the first to specifically call out girls’ rights. On December 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
