Nigeria warns the water release from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon might cause unprecedented floods in some of her states.

Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned the recent release of excess water from the Lagdo hydropower dam in northern Cameroon could result in flooding in several states across the country.

Mustapha Habib Ahmed, the director general of NEMA predicts that the states of Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa would be impacted.

Speaking at the weekend in Abuja during an emergency, he said the authorities were concerned over the sudden increase in flooding along the banks of the River Niger in Adamawa, Taraba, and Benue states in that happened in early October 2023.

According to him, reports from the Adamawa State confirm the upsurge of floodwaters along the plains of River Benue.

The situation is expected to be replicated in the downstream states of Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa Kogi, Anambra, Edo, and others.

He blames the sudden situation on the rapid release of waters from the Lagdo Dam, adding that, it had resulted in the displacement of residents of the affected communities.

More to that, there are fears that farmlands and valuable infrastructure might be washed away by flood waters.

The emergency management agency has issued alerts to authorities of state and local governments along rivers Niger and Benue basin areas, to immediately activate their response plans to avert potential damage and losses that will arise, due to the inundation of communities by flood waters.
