Nigeria’s financial watchdog, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has announced the recovery of 30 billion naira (€22 million) in an ongoing investigation involving Minister Betta Edu of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The funds were traced to over 50 bank accounts, according to the EFCC.

Minister Edu was suspended in January 2024 over allegations of diverting $640,000 of public money into a personal account. The EFCC has been investigating the matter since then, and the recent recovery of €22 million is a significant development in the case.

The suspension of Minister Edu came after the EFCC received a petition alleging that she had misappropriated funds meant for humanitarian aid and poverty alleviation programs. The petition, which was signed by a coalition of civil society organizations, accused the minister of using her position to siphon public funds for personal gain.

The recovery of €22 million is a significant milestone in the fight against corruption in Nigeria. Corruption is a major problem in the country, and it has been identified as a key factor hindering economic development and social progress.

The Nigerian government has made the fight against corruption a top priority, and the EFCC has been at the forefront of this effort. The commission has been instrumental in recovering billions of naira in stolen funds and prosecuting those involved in corrupt practices.

Note, according to sources, the investigation into Minister Edu’s alleged corruption is ongoing, and it is expected that more recoveries will be made in the coming weeks and months.
