The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed an Abuja-based Chinese supermarket located within the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja due to allegations of discriminatory practices against Nigerians.
On Monday, FCCPC officials stormed the supermarket and interrogated Nigerian workers present at the premises. Following the interrogation, the officials sealed the supermarket after discovering that the owner of the supermarket, a Chinese lady named Cindy Liu Bei, had fled the premises with her family.
The FCCPC’s action follows an exclusive report by The PUNCH on Sunday, which revealed that the supermarket had implemented a controversial policy restricting entry to Nigerians.
The discriminatory policy had sparked outrage among Nigerians, which pushed the FCCPC to take action against the supermarket. The commission’s officials responded swiftly.
The FCCPC’s decision to seal the supermarket is seen as a significant step towards ensuring that businesses in Nigeria operate fairly and without discrimination.
The Nigerian workers at the supermarket, who were mostly affected by the discriminatory policy, expressed their relief and gratitude towards the FCCPC’s intervention. They hope that the commission’s actions will prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
