Nigeria’s main labour unions on Tuesday, June 5th, suspended the strike they had began as a result of inflation, with the aim of continuing talks with the government for a lasting solution to be found, as regards the countries minimum wage.

Early this year 2024, the country witnessed a drastic increase in inflation which has left many of its citizens stranded.

On the 4th of June, Nigeria’s two biggest union federations, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), decried the status quo by shutting down the national grid, and also disrupted flights across the country. The strike came as a result of the state’s failure to review it’s minimum wage.

After their meeting late in Monday, with the trade unions, the government reportedly answered favorable to a higher monthly minimum wage of 60,000 Naira, whereas the trade unions are demanding for 494000 Naira a month, from the 30,000 Naira presently.

As it stands in Nigeria, discussions are reported to be ongoing and sources have it that, a period of one week has been given to the decision makers of the state’s, for a revaluation of the minimum wage of the country, or else the strike will continue.
