October 13 marks the annual celebration of the International Day of Natural Disaster Reduction, with this year’s theme being « Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future. »
October 13th was set by the UN General Assembly in 1989 with aim of raising awareness about the importance of reducing the impact of natural disasters and promoting resilience in communities worldwide.
With the devastating effects that natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, wildfires, among others, have on communities, causing loss of lives, displacement, and extensive damage to infrastructure, vulnerable populations are always coincidentally considered to be the main target, which is further compounded existing inequalities.
The theme for this year’s International Day of Natural Disaster Reduction highlights the urgent need to address the underlying inequalities that make certain communities more susceptible to the impacts of disasters as it stresses the importance of ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their socio-economic status, have equal access to resources, information, and support to build resilience against natural disasters.
In a bid therefore to see to that, governments, international organizations, and civil society groups are working hands-in-gloves to develop strategies and initiatives that prioritize vulnerable communities and ensure their inclusion in disaster risk reduction plans. In the same light, various events and activities are organized.
As the world faces increasing challenges from climate change and other natural happenings, the International Day of Natural Disaster Reduction serves as a reminder of the importance of working together to create a more equitable and resilient future for all.
