Senegal’s President Macky SALL, just like Côté d’Ivoire’s President OUATTARA, also dissolved his government, nevertheless he keeps his PM just five months to the 2024 Senegalese Presidential elections.
The decision which has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions among political analysts and citizens alike, was announced on October 6th 2023, following a presidential decree.
While the dissolution of a government is not uncommon, especially in the lead-up to elections, President Sall’s decision to retain Prime Minister Ahmadou Ba has left many puzzled. In office since 2019 the prime minister has according to Mr. President, been seen as a competent and capable leader, known for his expertise in economic matters.
Designated by Macky Sall to be the candidate of the presidential coalition Benno Bokk Yakaar (BBY), Amadou Ba will therefore have to reconcile, over the next five months, his role as Prime Minister while also being a candidate.
President Sall, who has been in power since 2012, initially announced he will not be going in for another term in office following critics from the Senegalese.
Keeping his Prime Minister five months to the elections, is seen as a political maneuver to gain an advantage over opposition parties as critics argue that it could be an attempt to consolidate power and limit the influence of potential challengers.
As Senegal prepares for the 2024 Presidential elections, Sall’s decision to dissolve the government but retain Prime Minister Ahmadou Ba has sparked both optimism and skepticism. While it signals a desire for stability and continuity, it also raises concerns about accountability and the need for a fresh start.
As it stands, only time will tell how this decision will impact the political landscape of Senegal and the aspirations of its citizens.
