TOGO: PARLIAMENT APPROVES NEW CONSTITUTION AMID CONTROVERSY

0

Togo’s parliament recently passed a new constitution that has sparked controversy both domestically and internationally. The approved constitution eliminates presidential term limits, a move that critics of President Faure Gnassingbé have labeled as a coup. This decision comes as Togo prepares to shift from a presidential to a parliamentary system.

Supporters of President Gnassingbé argue that the constitutional changes aim to reduce the president’s powers and transition the role into a more ceremonial position. However, critics view this move as a consolidation of power within the Gnassingbé family, who have maintained control over Togo for more than five decades.

President Faure Gnassingbé assumed office in 2005 following the passing of his father, who had governed the nation since 1967.

The approval of the new constitution is said to have marked a significant shift in Togo’s political landscape. It has raised concerns about the concentration of power and the future of democratic governance in the country.
