UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE: HEALTH FOR ALL, TIME TO ACT

December 12th, the world commemorates International Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC). This year’s edition, observed under the theme, « Health for All: Time to Act, highlights the urgency of taking immediate and concrete actions to accelerate progress towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), ahead of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 deadline.

Universal Health Coverage aims to ensure that all individuals and communities have access to quality health services without facing financial hardship. It is a key component of the SDGs, which include targets to achieve healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

The 2023 UHC Day theme underscores the need for countries, policymakers, and stakeholders to prioritize and expedite efforts towards achieving health coverage round the world. It serves as a reminder that time is of the essence, and tangible steps must be taken to make healthcare accessible and affordable for everyone.

According to sources, the global health crisis has exposed vulnerabilities and inequities in healthcare systems worldwide. It has demonstrated the urgent need for resilient health systems that can provide essential services to all, especially the most vulnerable populations.

By emphasizing the need for immediate action, the World Health Organization, (WHO) aims to galvanize governments, organizations, and individuals to redouble their efforts in advancing Universal Health Coverage. This includes investing in healthcare infrastructure, strengthening health systems, and ensuring equitable access to essential health services, including vaccinations, diagnostics, and treatments.
