WORLD CHILDREN’S Day 2023: FOR EVERY CHILD, EVERY RIGHT

0

November 20th, the world celebrates World Children’s Day, a day dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights of children. Observed annually, this year’s theme is « For Every Child, Every Right, » emphasizing the importance of upholding children’s rights worldwide.

Children are considered to be the future of the society, and ensuring their rights are respected and upheld is crucial for their well-being and development. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) serves as the foundation for these rights, outlining the basic principles and standards that every child is entitled to.

The UNCRC guarantees children the right to survival, development, protection, and participation. It recognizes that children have the right to be heard, to receive an education, to be protected from violence and exploitation, and to have access to healthcare, among other fundamental rights.

Unfortunately, millions of children around the world continue to face various forms of rights violations, including poverty, discrimination, violence, and lack of access to education and healthcare.

According to UNICEF in 2020, about 10% of the world’s children are not legally protected from corporal punishment. Over 1 in 3 students aged 13–15 experience bullying worldwide and approximately 1 in 4 children under the age of 5 – some 176 million – live with a mother who is a victim of intimate partner violence.

World Children’s Day hence, serves as a reminder that these issues be addressed urgently and effectively.

This year’s theme, « For Every Child, Every Right, » emphasizes the need to ensure that every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, has their rights respected and protected. It calls for action from decision-makers, organizations, and individuals to work together to create a world where every child can thrive.

On this World Children’s Day, various events and activities are being organized globally to raise awareness about children’s rights. Schools, communities, and organizations are coming together to educate children about their rights and empower them to become active participants in society.

Governments and policymakers are also being urged to prioritize children’s rights in their policies and decision-making processes. Investments in education, healthcare, and social protection programs are seen as crucial to ensure that children have access to quality services that enable them to reach their full potential.

That notwistanstanding, it should however be noted, World Children’s Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements made in advancing children’s rights and to recognize the individuals and organizations working tirelessly to protect and promote these rights. It is a day to acknowledge the progress made and to recommit to ensuring that every child’s rights are upheld.
