WORLD RADIOGRAPHY DAY : CELEBRATING PATIENT SAFETY.

Every year on November 8th, World Radiography Day is celebrated worldwide to raise awareness about the important role that radiographers play in healthcare and to promote the field of radiography. This day also honors the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895.

Radiography is a vital branch of medical imaging that uses X-rays, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and other imaging techniques to diagnose and treat diseases. Radiographers are skilled professionals who operate the equipment and produce high-quality images that help doctors make accurate diagnoses.

He adds that, CT Scan cost 50,000frs and goes beyond 100,000frs depending on the state of the patient, as well as according to different health institutions. He calls on the authorities to help provide more of the medical equipments in order to combat the high cost.

In Douala, the country’s economic hub, we are told the cost of CT Scan starts as from 75000frs, in some private institutions.

Patients across the country have expressed their frustration and concern over the escalating costs. “I recently had a minor accident and needed an X-ray, but when I saw the price, I couldn’t afford it. It’s disheartening to know that access to essential healthcare services is becoming a luxury,” says a patient who opts for non disclosure.

However, on this day, various events and activities are organized worldwide to celebrate and promote the profession. These include seminars, workshops, webinars, and awareness campaigns. Radiography departments in hospitals and healthcare institutions also organize open days to showcase their work and educate the public about the importance of radiography.

On one hand, World Radiography Day is an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the dedication and expertise of radiographers. Their contribution to the healthcare system is invaluable, and they play a crucial role in saving lives and improving patient outcomes.

On the other hand, in addition to their role in diagnosing and monitoring illnesses, radiographers also play a vital role in cancer treatment, trauma cases, and prenatal care. They work closely with doctors and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate and timely imaging services.
